Nonsurgical Therapy includes:

root planning

Scaling and Root Planning

Scaling, a type of teeth cleaning involves the removal of plaque and tartar from the teeth and right below the gum line. Root planning(Deep Cleaning), is careful cleaning of disease affected tooth roots. It is done to remove plaque, calculus, and the necrotic (dead)tissue on the root surface which is required for creating a healthy root surface. Since this procedure goes deeper than the regular Scaling, a local anesthetic is used. Root planning reduces inflammation, pocket depths, and allows supportive tissues to reattach to the root surfaces. For many patients a thorough, well performed root planning coupled with improvements in oral hygiene is all the therapy that is needed.

Localized Antibiotic/Antibacterial Therapy

Antibiotics in pill form or an antibiotic gel applied under the gum tissue may be used to reduce the bacterial infections causing periodontal disease. In some cases, an antibacterial mouth rinse is prescribed to help control plaque.

Regular Professional Supportive Care(Periodontal Maintenance)

After active therapy has been completed and pockets have been eliminated and tissues are healthy it is necessary to prevent the recurrence of periodontal disease. Continuing effective home care as well as regular professional supportive care is essential to maintain periodontal health.
