What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal diseases are bacterial infections of the gums and the bone that surrounds the teeth. They are caused mainly by the accumulation of bacteria called plaque. If not treated right away, the teeth themselves can be affected.

Plaque is always forming around the teeth, so it must be removed every day with regular brushing and flossing. If it is allowed to build up, tartar forms. The bacteria grow forming pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed.
